Twenty-four people have been charged during a two-day police operation on public transport across Sydney.
Operation Disrupt is a high-visibility operation which saw officers attached to the Police Transport Command targeting knife crime and ensuring community safety across the public transport network in the Sydney CBD and northern railway line areas.
Between 12pm on Friday 2 May 2025 and 2am Saturday 3 May 2025, officers attached to Police Transport Command carried out two knife-scanning operations at Central Railway Station and George Street, Sydney.
During the operation, officers patrolled 51 trains, 26 buses, six ferry services and inspected six licensed premises during which,
- Eight knives were located and seized
- 61 Transport Infringements Notices were issued
- 47 person-searches were conducted, and
- 12 drug detections were made.
As a consequence, police arrested 24 people who have been charged with 28 offences, including three by virtue of an outstanding warrant, others with supply prohibited drug and a third with possession of knife in public place-related offences.
Some examples of arrests during the operation include,
- About 9.20pm on Saturday 3 May 2025, officers arrested a 17-year-old boy on Park Street, Sydney, following a foot pursuit. Police seized a knife, before the boy was taken to Surry Hills Police Station where he was dealt with under the Young Offenders Act.
- About 3.15pm on Saturday 3 May 2025, officers arrested a 16-year-old boy before they seized a black knife along with a substance – believed to be cannabis – from his bag. The boy was dealt with under the Young Offenders Act.
- About 5pm on Saturday 3 May 2025, officers arrested a 35-year-old woman on Pitt Street, Sydney CBD, after they seized a knife and substances, alleged to be methamphetamine, cannabis and heroin. She has been issued a court attendance notice.
- About 7.30pm on Friday (2 May 2025), officers charged three teenage girls – two aged 13 and one aged 15 – and two teenage boys – aged 17 and 14 – at a home in the Newcastle area. It is alleged the teenagers were involved in multiple incidents including assault and robbery at Parramatta, Burwood, and Strathfield, between Thursday 1 May 2025 and Friday 2 May 2025.
The 17-year-old boy was charged with assault occasioning aggravated bodily harm in company of other, affray, destroy or damage property less than or equal to $2000, affray, aggravated robbery and inflict aggravated bodily harm and robbery. He was refused bail to appear at children's court tomorrow (Monday 5 May 2025).
The 15-year-old girl was charged with affray, common assault, affray, and aggravated robbery and inflict aggravated bodily harm. She was refused bail to appear at children's court tomorrow (5 May 2025).
The 14-year-old boy was charged with affray (two counts), assault occasioning aggravated bodily harm in company of other, aggravated robbery, larceny value less than or equal to $2000, robbery, and custody of knife in public place. He was refused bail to appear at children's court yesterday (Saturday 3 May 2025), where he was granted conditional bail to appear at the same court on Monday 12 May 2025.
One of the 13-year-old girl was charged with affray (two counts), common assault, steal from the person value less than or equal to $2000. She was granted conditional bail to appear at children's court on Thursday 15 May 2025.
The other 13-year-old girl was charged with affray (two counts) and common assault. She was granted conditional bail to appear at children's court on Monday 16 June 2025.
