Drug & Firearms Squad detectives have seized 28 firearms and more than 1000 rounds of ammunition during an Operation SAFE targeting illicit firearms and drugs in the Riverina Police District.
Operation SAFE, which stands for Seach and Firearm Enforcement, is a high-visibility policing initiative led by State Crime Command's Drug & Firearms Squad which was conducted in the state's Riverina between Tuesday 9 December 2025 and Thursday 11 December 2025.
The operation involved the execution of 10 Firearm Prohibition Order (FPO) compliance checks, safety inspections of more than 1100 firearms, 31 firearm safe storage inspections, and four firearm dealer audits.
Drug & Firearms Squad detectives were assisted by Riverina Police District, the Public Order & Riot Squad, Rural Crime Prevention Team, and the Firearms Registry.
Incidents of note include:
- About 2.15pm on Tuesday 9 December 2025, officers attended an address in Kooringal for the purpose of a FPO compliance check. During a search of the home, police located and seized four firearms, a baton, knuckledusters and a laser pointer. A small amount of drugs were located, consisting of methamphetamine, cocaine, and cannabis. A 21-year-old was arrested and taken to Wagga Wagga Police Station where he was charged with 12 offences relating to the possession of firearms, drugs, using prohibited weapons contrary to a prohibition order, and not keeping the firearms safely. The man was refused bail and appeared in Bail Division Local Court 5 on Wednesday 10 December 2025, where he was formally refused bail to appear in Wagga Wagga Local Court on Wednesday 17 December 2025.
- About 8am on Thursday 11 December 2025, officers executed a search warrant in Gumly Gumly where they located and seized a firearm, and a small amount of methamphetamine and cocaine. A 25-year-old woman was arrested at the scene and taken to Wagga Wagga Police Station, where she was charged with 27 offences relating to the ongoing supply of prohibited drugs and possession of an unregistered firearm and ammunition. She was refused bail to appear in Bail Division Local Court 5 today (Friday 12 December 2025).
