Ballina Shire Council is investing $4.3 million in major upgrades to the Ballina Resource Recovery Centre (RRC), making it quicker, safer and easier for the community to use the facility.
The project will upgrade the Front of House area with a second weighbridge, covered weighbridge roof structure, additional salvage store area and improved staff amenities.
The new second weighbridge will be a major improvement for customers, helping vehicles move through the facility more efficiently and reducing queues and wait times, particularly during busy periods.
Ballina Shire Council's Asset Management and Resource Recovery Manager Lloyd Isaacson said the upgrades were focused on improving the customer experience while creating a safer and more efficient facility.
"This is a significant investment in a facility our community relies on every day, and these upgrades will make a real difference to the customer experience," Mr Isaacson said.
"The second weighbridge will help us process vehicles more efficiently, reduce congestion and get customers on their way sooner.
"We know there will be some short-term inconvenience while construction is underway, but the end result will be a safer, faster and more user-friendly facility that will better serve our community into the future."
Construction is expected to commence 19 October 2026 and be completed by April 2027, subject to weather and site conditions.
The Resource Recovery Centre will remain open throughout construction, although customers should expect some delays and changed onsite traffic conditions as works progress. Customers are encouraged to allow additional time when visiting and follow directions from staff.
The Salvage Shed will remain open and will not be affected by the works.
