$6.5M Youth Plaza Opens in Perth's Southeast

  • Multi-million-dollar Youth Entertainment Space now open at Sutherlands Park in Huntingdale
  • Space designed by local young people features a skate plaza, pump track, multipurpose court and hangout zone
  • Facility features an entirely undercover youth plaza, a first for Perth

A state-of-the-art $6.5 million undercover youth entertainment space and skate plaza has been unveiled in Perth's south-east marking the delivery of a major Western Australian Government election commitment.

Splashed in vibrant colours, the Youth Entertainment Space (YES) at Sutherlands Park in Huntingdale was designed in close collaboration with local young people to ensure it was inviting and inclusive for all.

The new facility features:

  • split level skating plaza with rails and banks;
  • shallow skate bowl for all skill levels;
  • sealed pump track for BMX and mountain bikes or scooters;
  • an urban play area incorporating a hangout zone with swings and platformed seating; and
  • a multipurpose court to play games such as futsal, basketball, and a rebound wall.

In a first for metropolitan Perth, the huge plaza space is entirely covered by a shelter allowing the facilities to be enjoyed all year round.

The plaza also comes to life after dark with colourful LED lighting and a projector screen so it can be used to host special events.

The groundbreaking project was made possible by a $2 million investment from the WA Labor Government backed by $4.5 million from the City of Gosnells.

As stated by Local Government Minister Hannah Beazley:

"The Sutherlands Park youth plaza is an incredible space for young people and local families to enjoy.

"This project has been many years in the making, and driven by local young people to ensure the final plaza reflects their interests and aspirations.

"I'd like to thank local MLA Terry Healy and the City of Gosnells for championing this project and delivering such a high-quality community asset."

As stated by Southern River MLA Terry Healy:

"The Sutherlands Park Youth Entertainment Space is a facility our community can be proud of and an incredible space for our young people to enjoy day and night, rain or shine.

"It boasts Perth's first entirely undercover youth plaza meaning young people can hit the skate park, relax in the hangout zone and play on the multipurpose courts all year round.

"I am thrilled the WA Labor Government was able to make this project a reality and can't wait to see our local kids make this space their own."

As stated by City of Gosnells Mayor Terresa Lynes:

"The Youth Entertainment Space at Sutherlands Park has been carefully designed to give local young people engaging and attractive spaces to spend time, exercise and make quality connections with others in the community.

"Sutherlands Park is located in a major growth corridor, with the population of the area, including many families, expected to increase rapidly in the coming years.

"YES is a real asset to younger members of our community and a key component of the Sutherlands Park redevelopment, which now creates a one-stop recreational hub for the whole community."
