61 New recruits welcomed to North Queensland Police Academy

The North Queensland Police Academy has welcomed 61 new recruits today in one of its largest ever intakes.

The cohort is comprised of 16 female recruits and 45 male recruits ranging in age from 18 to 53.

The new police recruits will commence training through an updated curriculum spanning 34 weeks, an increase from 27 weeks.

The additional training includes domestic and family violence training and cultural training co-facilitated by external practitioners and people with lived experience, with a focus on trauma-informed and victim-centric policing responses.

As part of the QPS Recruit Training Program, recruits will be provided with new technology to assist their learning and be job ready when they graduate.

Acting Deputy Commissioner Wheeler wished the Recruits luck as they embarked on their new career paths.

"The path you have chosen will be one of the most challenging yet rewarding," he said.

"Your dedication and hard work over the next 34 weeks will pay off over the course of your careers and it goes without saying you will make some lifelong friends that commence right here at the academy.

"The QPS is currently conducting the biggest recruitment drive ever. We are seeking applicants from diverse backgrounds, from all parts of Queensland."

"Getting the right people for the role is critical to ensure we have the very best applicants to represent and serve our communities and substantially meet challenges into the future."

The newest Queensland Police Service recruits are due to graduate from the academy in August and will be allocated to the Far Northern, Northern and Central Regions of Queensland.

Police officers aren't born, they're made, with every challenge or adversity overcome, and their personal values, helping to shape them into great officers who can make a real difference.

There is no better time to join the QPS. You're already ready.
