The Finocchiaro CLP Government is delivering on its commitment to improve transport connectivity and invest in the Territory's future, with construction of the $85 million Mandorah Marine Facilities now complete.
Minister for Logistics and Infrastructure Bill Yan said the project is a game-changer for residents and visitors to Mandorah, Wagait Beach and Belyuen, providing safer, more accessible and modern marine infrastructure.
"This is about delivering world-class facilities for Territorians while supporting jobs and local business," Minister Yan said.
"We promised a year of action, certainty and security, and this $85 million investment is proof we're getting things done."
The project includes:
A brand-new ferry facility with Disability Discrimination Act compliant access for people with disability, wheelchairs and prams.A floating pontoon with shade and seating for up to 150 people.A new ferry terminal, upgraded car and trailer parks, accessible parking bays and an extended bus bay.An innovative on-site water storage and sewerage treatment system to irrigate landscaping. Two major breakwaters, built using 80,000 tonnes of rock, providing protection from sea swells and wave action.
Specialist marine construction company SMC Marine commenced work in May 2024, completing the project ahead of schedule in July 2025. Commissioning for ferry operations is underway, with the facilities set to open to the public on 16 August 2025.
Minister Yan said the project delivered significant benefits for the local economy.
"More than 90% of subcontractors were Territory businesses, and over 400 people worked on this project," he said.
"Local companies, including Aboriginal enterprise Quality Constructions and Maintenance and PattCon, played a critical role in delivering this project."
SMC Marine also contributed more than $62,000 in community benefit initiatives for Wagait Beach and Belyuen residents, including support for the Belyuen Community Government Council's mobile Kenbi Kafe, funding local clubs and infrastructure improvements.
SMC Marine Owner and Director Peter Philipp said he was proud to work with the Northern Territory Government and the community.
"The Mandorah Marine Facilities will provide the residents in this region with improved public transport services.
"SMC Marine is an Australian family-owned company that works across all states of Australia and the Northern Territory. We enjoy working collaboratively with our clients to design solutions to problems, particularly in the complex marine infrastructure environment."
As the facility transitions to an operational phase, it will enter a defects liability period to ensure this custom-built marine infrastructure continues to meet the highest standards.
"The Mandorah Marine Facilities project is about more than infrastructure - it's about supporting communities, improving safety and creating a better lifestyle for Territorians," Minister Yan said.
