$91.8 Million Boost To Safeguard Great Barrier Reef

The Australian Government has committed $91.8 million to strengthen protection of the Great Barrier Reef.

The new funding is comprised of $34.9 million for the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority to maintain on ground and on water management. It also includes $56.9 million for actions under the Reef 2050 Plan to support:

  • restoration and adaptation projects
  • water quality monitoring and enhanced research.

Major initiatives include:

  • 30 million to scale up reef restoration and adaptation technologies
  • $18.9 million to expand crown of thorns starfish control efforts
  • $6.6 million to strengthen monitoring through the Eye on the Reef program
  • $5 million to support tourism operators delivering reef protection activities
  • $3.5 million for coordinated field management across the Marine Park.

These measures aim to boost the Reef's resilience to climate change and support regional jobs.

They will maintain Australia's position as a global leader in reef management.
