A boost for eco-tourism

A not-for-profit peak tourism body supporting the eco-tourism industry has been awarded a multi-year sponsorship to further enhance tourism opportunities in Perth and Western Australia.

The City of Perth has approved a three-year $27,000 sponsorship to Forum Advocating Cultural and Eco-Tourism (FACET) to support its annual Professional Development Events Program.

Acting Chair Commissioner Gaye McMath said FACET operates state-wide promoting sustainable development and best practice in the cultural, heritage, eco, nature-based food and wine tourism sectors, that contribute to WA's point of difference as a tourism destination.

"FACET presents an annual program of forums, workshops and an annual conference showcasing the latest tourism trends and initiatives," Acting Chair Commissioner McMath said.

"In particular, FACET supports the development of tourism sectors that are unique to Western Australia and the program of events will allow for greater knowledge-sharing, and links between established and new entrants in the tourism industry.

"This sponsorship has the potential to help develop the capability of the industry and create long term economic benefits for Perth."

Founded in 1991, FACET now has a membership base of approximately 150 and a wider network of more than 400 industry professionals, including representatives from the tourism sector, academia, government agencies and cultural, ecological and scientific institutions.
