A step forward for Greater Hobart

Peter Gutwein,Minister for State Growth

The Hodgman Liberal Government is committed to capitalising on the many exciting possibilities on the horizon for our capital city, while also effectively managing and planning for pressures our city faces as it grows.

The Greater Hobart Act has been developed to provide a much needed framework to support collaborative decision making between the Greater Hobart councils of Clarence, Glenorchy, Hobart and Kingborough; and the Tasmanian Government.

Already the Government is working closely with these councils to progress work under the Hobart City Deal, and this Act will help attract investment by providing a whole-of-area focus across the four municipal boundaries to ensure that major planning decisions are considered strategically; including the efficient flow of traffic; urban renewal and affordable housing and the links with public transport, among many other measures.

The Bill has been prepared with a focus on the four major councils located around Hobart, but importantly, it will include an opt-in mechanism for other councils that may be impacted by strategic decisions.

This legislation will create a strategic path forward for the Greater Hobart area and facilitate the implementation of the Hobart City Deal and its many, exciting components. The Hodgman Government believes the Act will lead to better outcomes for residents in Southern Tasmania.
