An historic milestone for Aboriginal economic participation has been achieved, with Aboriginal-owned businesses delivering more than $1 billion of work across the State's Transport and Major Infrastructure portfolio.
The $1 billion worth of work exceeds the initial target of $700 million over the five years to June 2026, which was set in 2021.
The targets were put in place in an effort to improve economic and social outcomes for Aboriginal businesses and people by providing opportunities on major transport infrastructure projects across the State.
The achievement reflects the strength and capability of Aboriginal businesses and demonstrates the State's ongoing commitment to creating opportunities that drive economic empowerment and self-determination for Aboriginal communities.
These initiatives will additionally build the number of capable and qualified businesses and workers across Western Australia that can help deliver work and projects within the infrastructure industry, from construction through to maintenance and operations.
The State Government remains committed to strengthening Aboriginal participation in the transport infrastructure industry, setting new targets for future growth and continuing to remove barriers to procurement of Aboriginal businesses in all levels of the Transport and Major Infrastructure portfolio's supply chains.
The Cook Government is committed to creating quality jobs and businesses opportunities for Western Australians, so the State's economy remains the strongest in the nation.
As stated by Transport Minister Rita Saffioti:

"This milestone shows what's possible when procurement policies and partnerships are backed with genuine intent and action.
"Every contract secured by an Aboriginal-owned business strengthens communities and our economy, creates jobs, builds skills, and supports future generations."

"This is a landmark achievement for Aboriginal economic empowerment in Western Australia.
"Surpassing the $1 billion mark not only reflects the strength and capability of Aboriginal businesses but also reaffirms the Cook Government's commitment to creating meaningful, long-term opportunities that support self-determination and prosperity for Aboriginal communities."
