ACF Response To NSW Coal Industry 2026-50 Plan

In response to news the NSW government will not permit new coal mines and exploration projects (but will still consider coal mine extensions) under a revised framework for the coal industry, Australian Conservation Foundation campaigner Freja Leonard said:

"We welcome the news the NSW government won't accept new greenfield coal applications.

"Today's announcement is recognition that the coal industry is already in decline. The NSW government should now plan for the orderly phase out of coal mining coupled with support for coal workers.

"No greenfield coal mines is a position the state government should have taken in 2023 when the Climate Change (Net Zero Future) Act was passed.

"The Minns Government's continued acceptance of massive coal extensions or expansions, such as the Hunter Valley Operations Continuation project, runs contrary to the urgency that is required to meet the state's own emission reduction targets.

"NSW residents are already being hit hard by climate impacts with extreme weather events and extended deadly heatwaves on the rise.

"Methane from leaky coal mines is a potent climate accelerant. Cutting emissions off at the source is the fastest way to help manage the state's carbon budget.

"The Net Zero Commission's coal spotlight report makes it clear NSW cannot afford to approve a single additional coal project and must now plan for the orderly and rapid retirement of the dirty coal industry to meet its commitments under the Climate Change Act and, by extension, help Australia meet its Paris Agreement obligations.

"It's time to wind up all coal projects in NSW starting today and prepare for a renewable-powered net zero emissions future for the state."
