ACMA Releases Fourth Disinformation Report

The ACMA has today released the fourth report to government on the Australian Code of Practice on Disinformation and Misinformation.

The report - developed as part of our oversight role - sets out the code signatories' efforts under the voluntary arrangements to combat disinformation and misinformation, as well as the operation of code governance and reporting arrangements.

The key findings from the report include:

  • Signatories continue to update policies, systems and approaches to artificial intelligence on their platforms, including incorporating industry-wide standards on content labelling and provenance.
  • Most signatories have made modest improvements to their reporting of Australian-specific data, and some continue to provide trended data. Signatories have reported fewer pieces of content being actioned (including removals) across platforms.
  • Efforts to support third-party fact checking appears to be stalling in Australia.
  • Signatories continue to invest in media and digital literacy initiatives and programs to uplift end-user understanding and awareness of key issues.

The report is accompanied by an interactive report on the ACMA's data analysis, including an overview of changes to signatories' code commitments over time.

The ACMA will work with DIGI, the code's administrator, and code signatories to undertake a review of the code in late 2025.
