ACT Greens Leader, Shane Rattenbury, has expressed his disappointment at the outcome of the Federal Referendum, but committed the ACT Greens to continuing to work with First Nations communities and leaders to build our journey to reconciliation, and improve the lives of First Nations People.
"The Uluru Statement generously invited us to walk with First Nations people for a better Australia. I am saddened that in the outcome last night, our nation has not accepted that generous offer," said Mr Rattenbury.
"I am heartened by the strong support shown by Canberra residents, demonstrating that as a community we understand the importance of listening to First Nations voices. Our community has embraced the need to step up and face our history, and find a way to move beyond the injustice and dispossession that has been a feature of the last two centuries.
"We must now take other steps to build a better future for our nation, and for this continent's first inhabitants. The Greens - and many Australians - are committed to walking this journey alongside First Nations people.
"I would also like to express my concern at the increasing level of disinformation that plagues our political discourse. While there was a legitimate conversation to be had in this referendum, I was dismayed by some of the outlandish claims made by some parties that clearly had no basis in truth. This is a dangerous path, and as a community, we need to demand a higher standard if we are to protect our precious democracy.
"Many First Nations people may be feeling disheartened or even distressed by the outcome, and I encourage us all to reach out to our First Nations friends to offer support and kindness," said Mr Rattenbury.
