ACT Parents Urge Awareness Amid School Closures

ACT Parents - representing more than 60,000 public school parents and carers across the Territory - says today's unexpected closure of several ACT public schools has left many families seeking certainty and clear information.

Executive Officer Veronica Elliott said parents' first thoughts are always for their children's wellbeing and safety, and closures of this scale understandably create stress for many families.

"Parents want timely and reliable information, and we know this is an evolving situation," Ms Elliott said. "Everyone is working as quickly as they can to provide updates and to get schools back into normal operation as soon as possible."

With multiple school sites affected, ACT Parents recognises that providing alternative arrangements for students today is extremely challenging.

"We know school closures don't affect all families equally," Ms Elliott said. "For parents who work casually or who don't have flexible arrangements, this can mean a real loss of income and a scramble to organise care. Many families are doing their best under difficult circumstances."

Ms Elliott said many parents will now be wondering whether their child's school will reopen on Monday.

"At this stage, the most reliable information will come from direct emails from your school and the Education Directorate website," she said. "The Directorate has now updated its website to include timestamped information, so families can be confident they are seeing the latest advice."

ACT Parents encourages all families to monitor school communications and check the Directorate's website regularly as further updates are provided.

"We know this is a difficult day for many parents, carers and students," Ms Elliott said. "Please be assured that everyone involved is working hard to restore school operations safely and to communicate changes as soon as they're confirmed."
