- Cook Government committed to promoting active healthy lifestyles
Fifty-one schools across Western Australian have been awarded funding towards a range of initiatives to support active travel including bike and scooter parking infrastructure, bike skills, and pedestrian road safety education workshops.
More than $325,000 has been allocated through the latest round of the Your Move program's Connecting Schools Grant, a Cook Government initiative that supports school communities to develop safe, healthy, and sustainable travel habits.
A key action of theWestern Australia Bicycle Network Plan is to improve infrastructure and encourage opportunities for bike riding in the regions.
More than $26,000 in funding has been allocated to six schools in regional WA under the latest round of the program including in Albany, Geraldton, and Margaret River.
The Cook Government is committed to making active travel more accessible throughout the State through significant investment into walking and riding infrastructure, with more than $1.4 million invested as part of the Connecting Schools Grant program since 2018.
Last year, the Your Move program recorded one of its best years yet for active travel to and from school, with a 9 per cent jump in active travel across participating schools, and a 6 per cent reduction in car use.

As stated by Transport Minister Rita Saffioti:
"Supporting our kids to walk, wheel, or ride to school has significant positive impacts on their physical, social, and mental wellbeing.
"The Your Move program is delivering great results across WA, encouraging active travel early in life and helping to foster long-term healthy habits in our communities.
"Our government is proud to have provided $1.4 million to schools through this grant program, which is not only delivering new active travel infrastructure and building students' skills, but is helping to reduce traffic and parking pressures at our schools."
As stated by Education Minister Sabine Winton:
"Congratulations to the awarded schools - it's great to see their ongoing commitment towards supporting active travel.
"Whether students and their families walk, wheel, or ride, they're all inexpensive, green, and healthy ways to get around.
"More schools than ever are experiencing the benefits of the Your Move program.
"I want to encourage all schools to play their part in supporting healthier, more engaged, and active children."
