Additional Housing for Key Workers in Alice Springs, Katherine

NT Government

The Territory Labor Government is addressing key worker and private sector accommodation shortages in Alice Springs and Katherine.

Three Northern Territory companies will construct 193 new dwellings in Alice Springs and Katherine.

The agreements have been awarded through the Northern Territory Government's Regional Accommodation Project, which aims to address key worker and private sector accommodation shortages in the towns. These include:

· Melanka Pty Ltd to deliver 174 multi-level dwellings on Todd Street, in Alice Springs;

· Blueprint NT to deliver 6 dwellings in Kilgariff, Alice Springs; and

· Rundle Developments Pty Ltd to deliver 13 dwellings on Rundle Street, Katherine.

The 180 dwellings in Alice Springs will be delivered over the next four years, with 90 of the dwellings to be used by key workers, and the remainder to be offered for sale and rent in the private market.

The Katherine dwellings will be completed by 2025 and will also be available for government workers and the private market.

Work will continue to attract more developers to build another 227 homes in Katherine. The Government is also working to service and create an additional six superlot subdivision parcels which will create the potential future provision of 380 residential lots in Katherine East. The Northern Territory's newly formed Housing Alliance will continue to investigate opportunities for housing in Katherine, and provide advice to government on accommodation solutions for the region.

In addition, the Northern Territory Government has commenced discussions with Traditional Owners in Nhulunbuy to construct new residential dwellings for the town.

Construction will bring much-needed residential accommodation options close to town centres, which will aid in attracting and retaining key workers to the regions.

Quotes attributable to Chief Minister, Eva Lawler:

"For 18 months the Territory Government has been working with local developers to award the building of more than 190 homes for key workers.

"Key workers and their skills are essential to the economic and social development of the Territory, this is why we have been working hard to find the right developers for this major project.

"Over the next five years more than 190 homes will be built in Katherine and Alice Springs. The Government will also continue to work on building a further 227 in the regions.

"Constructing these dwellings in Katherine and Alice Springs will bring broader economic and social benefits, including job creation and housing for key workers and the private sector."
