From this Sunday (December 1), an extra lifeguard will be added to each shift at Alexandra Headland, Coolum main beach, Kings Beach, Maroochydore and Mooloolaba main beach.
The additional lifeguard patrols will continue until January 28, 2020.
Economic Tourism, Events and Sport Councillor Jason O'Pray said council allocated an additional $236,000 to Surf Life Saving Queensland (SLSQ) in the 2019-20 budget to support the extra services.
"This additional funding means council is investing a total of $4.84 million in lifeguard services to keep our beaches safe," Cr O'Pray said.
He said extra lifeguards at our busiest beaches during the summer period was one of the key recommendations endorsed by council in the Sunshine Coast Lifeguard Services Plan 2018-2022.
"This increased resourcing strengthens coverage across our peak visitation period, not just the Queensland school holiday dates.''
"Professional lifeguard services are delivered by SLSQ on behalf of council and the women and men who patrol our stunning coastline do an incredible job.
"In 2018-19 our lifeguards kept over eight million beach visitors safe.
"They performed 200,429 preventative actions, administered 15,045 first aid treatments and saved the lives of 436 people through in-water rescues.
"A swim at the beach is one of the simplest pleasures in life and these additional services and extra lifeguards will help ensure both residents and tourists are safe in the water,'' he said.
Chief Lifeguard Greg Cahill said SLSQ was committed to the provision of a proactive lifeguard service to protect beachgoers.
"The increase in personnel over the coming months will further ensure the safety of visitors to our beaches this summer," he said.
"Our professional lifeguard service arm, the Australian Lifeguard Service Queensland, employs 29 full-time and part-time lifeguards, three supervisors, and around 80 casual lifeguards on the Sunshine Coast. These staff are all dedicated to saving lives across 20 beaches in the region.
"I thank the council for their continued support of our lifeguard services."
