Adelaide City Commuters Turn New Corner

The morning commute just became quicker and easier for citybound motorists in Adelaide, with the completion of the $40 million James Congdon Drive and Sir Donald Bradman Drive intersection upgrade.

Three new right-turn lanes are now in place for citybound commuters at the inner western suburbs intersection.

The $40 million upgrade has introduced three right-turn lanes onto Sir Donald Bradman Drive, making it quicker and easier for motorists to travel from South Road straight into the city.

The improved traffic flow is expected to reduce peak hour delays in the area by 30 per cent for the approximately 49,000 vehicles using the intersection each day.

Additional turn and through lanes, improved shared use paths and a new link road for businesses have reshaped the intersection into a safer and more efficient citybound connection.

The completed upgrade includes:

  • three new right-turn lanes from James Congdon Drive onto Sir Donald Bradman Drive
  • an additional shared through- and right-turn lane on James Congdon Drive (southbound)
  • extra through lanes and improved turn lanes on Sir Donald Bradman Drive
  • upgraded pedestrian crossings including new wombat crossings
  • new shared use paths
  • new landscaping.

The upgrade is part of the $850 million broader network upgrades package, jointly funded by the Albanese and Malinauskas Labor Governments as part of the River Torrens to Darlington (T2D) Project, helping ensure the road network functions efficiently during construction and into the future.

Quotes attributable to Federal Minister for Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development and Local Government Catherine King:

"The Albanese and Malinauskas Labor Governments are building better, safer and more efficient road networks like here in the heart of Adelaide.

"This project is a fantastic result for both drivers and local businesses, offering a smoother, quicker run into the city in the morning - keeping Adelaide and South Australians moving."

Quotes attributable to Federal Member for Adelaide Steve Georganas:

"Close to 50,000 vehicles use this intersection every day and this upgrade will mean less time queueing at lights and more time driving to where the people of Adelaide need to go.

"Motorists will immediately notice the difference, with less congestion and better movement into the city for the morning commute."
