Adopt a greyhound and give a racing dog a fur-ever home

Queensland Parliament threw open its doors today to welcome Timmy and Tommy who have been successfully rehomed through the Queensland Racing Integrity Commission's Greyhound Adoption Program (GAP).

Racing Minister Stirling Hinchliffe said the greyhounds became part of the program after their official racing days were over.

"They've got new homes with terrific families and now we're looking for fur-ever homes for the many other greyhounds up for adoption – and they are all well and truly properly House trained," he said.

"This is a wonderful and affirming program that matches former racing greyhounds with just the right family.

"Today we've met Tommy and Timmy at Parliament House, who are both absolutely delightful, but there are greyhounds across Queensland and with a range of personalities that would suit just about every home.

"Already, in the past financial year 274 have been adopted through programs in South East Queensland and Townsville."

Racing Integrity Commissioner Ross Barnett said Greyhounds made excellent pets for many families even those who don't have a big backyard.

"They are even perfect for people who live in apartments," he said.

"A short walk every day is all the exercise most greyhounds usually need and they love the lounge most of the time.

"Some dogs are more energetic so the program matches those dogs with a family with more space, so we are petitioning members of parliament to get the word out that greyhounds make great pets to their constituents.

"The GAP program is unique as each dog graduates from the program with a green collar, which means they can be walked on leash in the community without a muzzle according to Local Government regulations.

"Each greyhound is matched with the perfect family that suites them."
