Residents who were previously experiencing homelessness on Forth Street in Kempsey are no longer residing on public land and are receiving ongoing support from partner agencies.
This outcome was made possible through the collaborative efforts of Kempsey Shire Council, New Horizons, Community Housing Limited, the NSW Government and Michael Kemp MP. Throughout the process, all partners worked to support the individuals with dignity and respect, while advocating for their needs and a sustainable long-term solution.
Kempsey Shire Council CEO Andrew Meddle said the emphasis was on supporting people and strengthening the community.
"Our focus has always been showing compassion for the individuals in need," said Mr Meddle.
"Through shared efforts with our partners, these individuals now have the support to meet their immediate housing needs and to work towards long-term stability. This is a testament to the strength of collaboration and care in our community."
Community Housing Limited played a key role in identifying suitable accommodation options and will continue to assist the residents. New Horizons will provide ongoing assistance, ensuring individuals have access to services and long-term stability through personalised support plans.
Once residents had collected their belongings from the Forth Street location, Council staff cleaned the site and removed items no longer needed. Fencing has now been installed around the area to help manage access and maintain the safety of public land.
Homelessness is a complex and very real issue, experienced in many different ways and Council encourages residents to remain understanding and compassionate toward those in vulnerable circumstances.
