AI Group Hails New Victorian Premier Ben Carroll

Australian Industry Group has congratulated Ben Carroll on his election as the new Premier of Victoria.

Australian Industry Group Victorian Head Tim Piper said Mr Carroll has developed a constructive relationship with the business community and expressed hope that this will be reflected in the policies of his new Government.

"Mr Carroll has in various portfolios sought to engage with the business community. This has set him apart in many ways. We hope that constructive approach will be reflected in the policies introduced by his Government," Mr Piper said.

"The new Premier has indicated he will establish a Royal Commission into criminality and corruption on State Government funded infrastructure projects. It is vital that the Commission has broad and comprehensive terms of reference that do not seek to absolve any section of the community – whether government, business, unions or any other group – from scrutiny regarding any role they may have played in corrupt conduct.

"Criminal activity on building sites must be addressed and dealt with appropriately," Mr Piper said.

Mr Piper also said the Premier has an immediate opportunity to demonstrate that his leadership represents a fresh approach for Victoria.

"He should immediately withdraw the work-from-home legislation proposed under the previous Government and ensure it is not imposed on Victorian businesses or Victorian workers," he said.

"The Premier has an excellent opportunity to show that his Government will work in genuine partnership with business and the broader community, rather than disenfranchising large sections of it. This is a chance to start to take Victoria in a new direction and demonstrate that business, government and working people can all benefit while making Victoria the best place to invest in once again."

Mr Piper said there is much more that can be done to strengthen business confidence and improve economic conditions. The upcoming election must see both major parties lay out clear strategies to reduce the tax and regulatory burden on business and to make Victoria once again an attractive destination for private sector investment.

"We look forward to meeting with the new Premier to discuss practical reforms that can help grow investment, jobs and confidence in Victoria," he said.

Mr Piper also acknowledged the contribution of former Premier Jacinta Allan and thanked her for her service to the Victorian community.

"Jacinta Allan has made a significant contribution to Victoria through many years of public service, and we thank her for the considerable service she has given to the Victorian community," Mr Piper said.
