ALA welcomes appointment of new Chief Judge of District Court

Ms Michelle Antunovich, the WA President of the Australian Lawyers Alliance (ALA) welcomes the appointment of Her Honour Judge Julie Wager as the new Chief Judge of the District Court of Western Australia.

Judge Wager came to District Court bench in 2005 after a distinguished career as a criminal lawyer and five years as the inaugural Magistrate in the Drug Court.

Her Honour is a past President of the Criminal Lawyers Association and acted in a wide range of cases in the years before judicial appointment.

"Judge Wager is highly respected for her work in the Children's Court and is widely acknowledged to be a highly competent and compassionate judge," said ALA National President-Elect, Mr Graham Droppert. "Her Honour has also delivered a number of important decisions in personal injury damages claims in her period as a judge of the District Court.

"Both the profession and the community have good reason to be optimistic that the District Court will continue to develop, and will ensure justice is available to all."

The ALA is a national association of lawyers, academics, and other professionals dedicated to protecting and promoting justice, freedom and the rights of the individual.
