The $13.1 million Albany radiation oncology service has marked another milestone with the release of the forward works tender.
The tender is a vital step in preparing Albany Health Campus for new, specialised radiation therapy equipment.
Works include improvements to parking and vehicle access at Albany Health Campus as well as preparation for the main building works which are anticipated to commence in 2021.
Once complete, the project will deliver a specialised bunker, known as a Linac Suite, to provide radiation oncology services using high energy x-rays which destroy cancer cells.
The preliminary works are essential in ensuring the site is able to safely house the radiotherapy equipment while improved parking and vehicle access will see an additional 67 bays established by project completion.
The new service is expected to be operational in the latter half of 2022.
As stated by Health Minister Roger Cook:
"Radiation oncology treatment requires multiple attendances so having this service locally means Great Southern cancer patients will be able to remain close to family, friends and broader support networks throughout their time of need.
"I'm pleased to see this project reaching another milestone that will allow for important building preparations so the main construction works can commence.
"It's absolutely vital we get this preliminary step right to protect patients, visitors and staff from potential radiation exposure and ensure the longevity of this multimillion-dollar equipment.
"This is a significant investment by the taxpayer so it's important we don't cut corners and take the time to make sure the service is safe and fit for purpose.
"This is another example of this Government's commitment to ensuring every Western Australian, regardless of where they live, has access to the best possible healthcare."
