ALGA supports SGARs motion

A notice of motion was brought to Bayside City Council in March 2022 to find suitable alternatives to rat poisons known as Second-Generation Anticoagulant Rodenticides (SGARs) that contain toxins thought to be contributing to a sharp increase in deaths of endangered Powerful Owls.

Bayside City Council raised the motion at the 2022 National General Assembly of Local Government, held in Canberra and at the 28 July meeting, the ALGA board resolved to support the motion as follows:

This National General Assembly calls on the Australian Government to recognise the harmful impacts of second-generation rodenticides and promote alternative methods of rodent management.

ALGA will include this amended motion in ministerial correspondence to Senator the Hon Murray Watt, Minister for Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry and Hon Tanya Plibersek MP, Minister for the Environment and Water, to inform them about local government's concern regarding these products.

Another motion from Bayside was also considered at the 28 July ALGA Board meeting and adopted as below:

This National General Assembly calls on the Australian Government to develop wildlife friendly lighting standards.

The motion will be included in ALGA's correspondence to Minister Plibersek.
