Algal Bloom At Black Beach

Kiama Council

Algal blooms in Kiama.

Kiama Municipal Council wishes to advise beachgoers to avoid swimming at Black Beach and Kiama Harbour until further notice due a suspected marine algal bloom that washed ashore on Monday.

Other beaches in the Kiama local government area may also be impacted, especially in windward corners.

Algal blooms (cyanobacteria) can produce toxins that cause skin irritation and people should avoid swimming, surfing or other activities in this area that could bring them into direct contact with the bloom.

These algal blooms typically dissipate quickly with changes in wind and tides.
