Algal bloom detected on Magnetic Island

Townsville City Council is recommending people and their pets avoid contact with a naturally occurring Marine Algal Bloom in coastal waters.

A Townsville City Council spokesperson said the effected beaches include Balgal Beach, Alma Bay and particularly Peterson Creek in Geoffrey Bay.

"Council has erected signage at the beaches advising the public to avoid contact with the water," the spokesperson said.

"Pets should be kept away from the water and any fish caught should not be consumed until conditions improve.

"Council will continue to monitor the situation and advise the community when the algal bloom has dispersed."

The blooms – known as 'Red Tide' – can cause skin irritations and make pets sick.

Council thanks the community for their co-operation and patience during this time.
