A Kaitaia man will appear in court on ammunition and drugs offences after his alleged actions sparked a callout to his address.
Police responded to a report that a man was seen in the Pāmapūria area in possession of a firearm at around 4.50pm on Saturday.
Senior Sergeant Richard Garton, of Kaitaia Police, says on arrival at an address, Police observed a man heading into bush carrying what appeared to be a rifle.
"The address was searched and inside our staff found syringes and what Police believe to be bags of methamphetamine.
"Police also seized a range of ammunition, including a casing for .22 rifle, as well as other shotgun shells and ammunition."
The man seen leaving the address was arrested at a nearby address a short time later.
"After speaking to this man, Police later located an air rifle in the area," Senior Sergeant Garton says.
"A search of the bushes near the house located another rifle. Further ammunition, syringes and empty bags of what Police believe had contained methamphetamine were also found."
A 49-year-old man has been charged with drugs offences in relation to the possession of utensils and unlawful possession of ammunition.
He is expected to appear in Kaitaia District Court today.
