Annual Road Resealing Program Kicks Off

Roughly 60 kilometres of roads in the region will be renewed as part of Tamworth Regional Council's Annual Road Resealing Program.

The program kicks off tomorrow and will run until March 2027 while the total budget of these works is approximately $5.5 million, funded through Council's 2026-27 road maintenance budget.

The program has been helped made possible through funding from the Special Rate Variation (SRV). Council committed that two-thirds of the SRV funds would be invested into improving our roads and transport network.

Murray Russell, Manager - Operations and Construction at Tamworth Regional Council, said the 60 kilometres of road reseals will be shared across urban and rural roads.

"There will be roughly 200 road segments in total that will be resealed," Mr Russell said.

"About half will be in urban areas and the other half will be in rural areas."

The works are expected to ramp up into November and December and Council has planned to avoid resealing urban roads throughout January to minimise disruptions during Tamworth Country Music Festival, weather permitting.

Joshua Street and Scotland Road in Somerton and Ridge Street, Yarran Street and Cross Street in Attunga are the first roads scheduled to be resealed as part of the program which is designed to protect roads before they become damaged.

"If these roads are left to deteriorate, the cost to repair the road spikes significantly," Mr Russell said.

Road resealing involves applying a new layer of bitumen and aggregate to the road surface, creating a watertight seal that protects the underlying pavement structure. Once water penetrates, the damage accelerates quickly and can require complete reconstruction.

Traffic management will be in place during works, and road users are asked to observe speed limits and follow the directions of traffic controllers.
