ANZ today announced that its electronic payment service and gateway, ANZ eGate, is now available in Tonga, enabling business customers to securely accept payments through online sales.
ANZ Tonga Country Head, David Dudley said: "This is an exciting new option for businesses in Tonga looking to grow by expanding online.
"Tonga's economy has had to deal with a series of shocks, from Tropical Cyclone Gita in 2018, to COVID-19 and Cyclone Harold in April 2020, and the HungaTonga-HungaHa'apai undersea volcano eruption last year.
"Business owners have shown they are resilient, and we know that they have a lot to offer the world.
"ANZ eGate will enable businesses to offer a secure online payment channel to their customers, both nationally and globally.
"With the global growth in online trade, there's never been a better time to showcase products from Tonga to the world.
"ANZ eGate will not only benefit large businesses but also smaller entrepreneurs here in Tonga who are looking for a solution to introduce their local products online and accept payments directly into their bank account.
"Funds will go through ANZ eGate to the business account instantly, no matter where the payment has come from, which means improved cashflow for business owners.
"This can also change the way the Tongan diaspora support family and friends back home in an emergency.
"Many businesses in Fiji, Samoa, the Cook Islands, PNG, New Zealand and Australia are already using ANZ eGate. We know that it can open up massive opportunities for businesses in Tonga too," Mr Dudley said.
