Appointment to Federal Court of Australia 23 July

I am pleased to announce that Ms Kylie Elizabeth Downes QC has been appointed as a judge of the Federal Court of Australia and will commence on 26 July 2021.

Ms Downes has been appointed to the Queensland Registry to replace Justice John Reeves following his retirement. She was admitted as a Barrister in the Supreme Court of Queensland in 1992. She was appointed Senior Counsel in 2008, with the position transitioning to Queen's Counsel in 2013.

On behalf of the Australian Government, I congratulate Ms Downes on her appointment and thank her for her willingness to serve the people of Australia as a judge of the Federal Court of Australia.

MS KYLIE ELIZABETH DOWNES QC

Ms Downes graduated with a Bachelor of Laws (Hons) from the Queensland University of Technology in 1991 and with a Bachelor of Civil Law (Hons) from the University of Oxford in 1993.

Ms Downes has specialised in commercial practice and has particular experience in contractual disputes, insolvency-related disputes, banking law, mining law, company law, joint venture disputes, construction disputes and intellectual property matters. She has extensive experience as an advocate, at trial and on appeal.
