16 April 2025 – Porto, Portugal

APT Travel Group celebrated the christening of MS Estrela, the company's purpose-built river ship designed for Portugal's iconic Douro River, on April 15. The ceremony took place in Porto, marking a significant moment for the group as it continues to grow its European fleet.

A highlight of the day was the formal announcement of MS Estrela's Godmother: UK travel media leader and industry advocate, Lucy Huxley. Well known for her passion, professionalism and long-standing support of the global travel sector, Lucy brought warmth and authenticity to the role, delivering a heartfelt speech before performing the traditional champagne blessing.

Reflecting on the occasion, Lucy Huxley said:

"It's an incredible honour to be named Godmother of MS Estrela. I've long admired APT and Travelmarvel for their passion, innovation and the incredible experiences they create for travellers. Standing on the sun deck, champagne in hand, surrounded by the Douro's beauty and such wonderful people from across our industry — it was genuinely emotional. This ship is something special, and I can't wait to see the memories it helps create."

"Lucy has long been a champion of travel, and we couldn't be prouder to have her as the Godmother of MS Estrela," said David Cox, CEO of APT Travel Group. "Her enthusiasm for the industry and genuine warmth reflect the spirit of this ship — one designed to bring people together and showcase the soul of Portugal."

Guests gathered on the ship's sun deck for the ceremony, accompanied by a live performance from a local string duo and served Portuguese-inspired cocktails. Speeches were delivered by Portugal's Minister of Tourism, Ana Mendes Godinho, APT Travel Group CEO, David Cox, and Paul Melinis, APT Travel Group Managing Director for UK & Europe, before the ship was officially welcomed to the Douro.

Purpose-built for the region, MS Estrela features 60 spacious staterooms and suites, panoramic views, and relaxed European-inspired interiors. Onboard highlights include a sun deck with one of the largest pools on the Douro River, an alfresco bar, regional cuisine, and locally themed entertainment.

Following the ceremony, MS Estrela departed Porto and began her journey upriver to Régua, with guests enjoying a relaxed afternoon onboard and a four-course Captain's Welcome Dinner in the main restaurant.

Now sailing for the 2025 season, The MS Estrela features in highlight itineraries for both APT and Travelmarvel, including APT's 14-day Douro Delights with Madrid and Lisbon and Travelmarvel's 11-day Lisbon with Douro Discovery.
