Education and Training Minister Sue Ellery is in Broome today to announce local firm Engawa Architects has been engaged to design new and upgraded facilities at Broome Primary School.
A deliberately lit fire at Broome Primary School destroyed four classrooms, the staff room, office and store room, as well as damaging the administration building in January.
The cost to rebuild the facilities destroyed by fire will be funded through insurance, while an additional $2.765 million will be allocated from the State Government for a new administration building to be included with the rebuild.
A project consultation group, including school staff and representatives from the school community, will help ensure the final design has an authentic Broome style.
The school's century-old buildings were saved during the fire, and these will remain an important part of the school's layout.
Located on Roebuck Bay in the traditional home of the Djugun Yawuru people, Broome Primary School has more than 400 students from kindergarten to Year 6.
Engawa Architects will lead the project, with construction expected to start by mid-2021.
As stated by Education and Training Minister Sue Ellery:
"I know the students, staff and the wider Broome community were devastated when a fire ripped through this beautiful and historic school, and I hope this announcement will provide hope and a sense of excitement.
"Through the project consultation group, the school community will have an opportunity to ensure the facilities are best-in-class and reflect the heritage nature of the school."
As stated by Kimberley MLA Josie Farrer:
"Broome Primary School is a historical and important part of our local community. It plays a vital role in the lives of our young children.
"I am pleased that design work to rebuild our school will be led by a local company who will work closely with the community and school to ensure that the traditional style is retained."
