Asbestos Clean-up Underway at Lake Jindabyne Sites

A red, black and white sign that reads

Following the discovery of old asbestos-containing material at two locations on the Lake Jindabyne foreshore, Council has engaged specialist contractors to undertake clean-up, sampling, testing and air monitoring remediation works at each site from Tuesday 9 June 2026.

The affected areas will remain closed to the public until Council's contracted asbestos specialists can confirm that the site is safe to reopen. Residents and visitors are asked to please keep out of the fenced areas and follow the direction of site staff and signage.

There is no immediate risk to the public as the site is closed. All members of the public must obey the closure signage and steer clear of the area.

Site 1 is located approximately 50 metres south of the Jindabyne boat ramp.

Site 2 is located on McLure Circuit.

The first stage of the remediation process begins Tuesday 9 June 2026, weather permitting.

Contractors will be removing surface and near-surface-level material, sampling and testing the removed material, and taking precautionary air monitoring readings at both sites. Some minor excavation will be required as part of these works.

Specialist contractors are required by law in NSW to complete the full assessment, removal, and remediation process when asbestos is found.

No estimates for the reopening of either site can be provided at this time.
