Assault and UUMV charges, Broadbeach

Police have arrested a man and a woman after an alleged stolen vehicle crashed into a tram at Broadbeach this afternoon.

Police will allege that shortly before 2pm a stolen BMW collided with a tram travelling south on the Gold Coast Highway, causing some damage to the tram. No one on the tram was injured.

The male driver and female passenger of the stolen BMW fled on foot heading in an easterly direction towards St Kilda Avenue.

A 27-year-old woman standing next to her vehicle at the intersection of the Gold Coast Highway and St Kilda Avenue was threatened by the man, as he demanded to be driven away from the scene.

When the woman refused police will allege the man became violent grabbing her by the wrist and pulling her arm behind her back before pulling a gel blaster from his bag.

Members of the public came to the woman's aid with the man running away. He was chased by four people who managed to grab hold of him on the Gold Coast Highway and hold him down until police arrived a short time later.

The 40-year-old man was allegedly assaulted when he was punched during the struggle.

Police arrested the male driver and his female passenger.

Gold Coast detectives have remanded a 22-year-old man Currumbin Waters man in custody to appear before the Southport Magistrates Court at a later date charged with unlawful use of a motor vehicle, two counts of assault, deprivation of liberty and weapons offences.

A 19-year-old Logan Central woman has been charged with unlawful use of a vehicle and is due to appear in the Southport Magistrates Court tomorrow.
