Assistant Secretary of State for East Asian and Pacific Affairs Daniel J. Kritenbrink met with People's Republic of China (PRC) Vice Foreign Minister for Asia Sun Weidong in Washington, D.C. The two sides held a candid, in-depth, and constructive consultation on regional issues as part of ongoing efforts to maintain open lines of communication.
The two sides exchanged views on respective policies, and the Assistant Secretary discussed the U.S. Indo-Pacific Strategy and emphasized the importance of a free and open, connected, prosperous, resilient, and secure Indo-Pacific region and upholding the rules-based international order. The two sides discussed regional issues, including Burma, North Korea, and maritime matters. The Assistant Secretary also reaffirmed the importance of maintaining peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait.
The meeting followed recent high-level engagements, including between Secretary Blinken and Vice President Han Zheng in New York and between National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan and Director and Foreign Minister Wang Yi in Malta, among other recent bilateral engagements. The two sides reiterated the importance of maintaining open channels of communication on areas of difference as well as areas of cooperation.
