Assisting southern Councils maintain recycling service

Peter Gutwein,Minister for the Environment, Parks & Heritage

The Hodgman majority Liberal Government has supported Hobart, Glenorchy, Clarence and Kingborough Councils to reach an agreement with SKM receivers, KordaMentha, to continue the operation of the Derwent Park recycling facility.

We have been working closely with the four Southern Metropolitan Councils on short and long term solutions to this issue.

Today, I can announce the Government will contribute $50,000 towards the $148,000 required to support the continued processing of the backlog of comingled bales of recyclable material at the Derwent Park facility.

The funding will also allow for an extra Saturday shift at the plant for the next six months to ensure none of the uncontaminated stockpile goes to landfill.

Avoiding the need to dispose of the backlog in landfill is a great environmental outcome, as is the restoration of the recycling system on a sustainable basis.

Today's agreement means that residents in southern Tasmania can continue to recycle whilst having faith in the stability and integrity of the waste recycling system.
