Aussie Fund Boosts Dementia, Aged Care Research

Department of Health

The MRFF's $185 million Dementia, Ageing and Aged Care Mission (the Mission) supports older Australians to:

  • maintain their health and quality of life as they age
  • live independently for longer
  • access quality care when they need it.

A review of the Mission by MH Consulting Group found that the MRFF has contributed significantly to dementia, ageing and aged care research in Australia.

  • Between 2015 and August 2024, the Australian Government invested $295 million in 126 dementia, ageing and aged care research projects through the MRFF.
  • Stakeholders say Australia is a global leader in dementia research.
  • The Mission has a strong focus on consumer engagement and priority populations. It has also prioritised research translation by supporting interventions that are ready for real world application.
  • The MRFF has increased access to dementia, ageing and/or aged care clinical trials for approximately 21,000 Australians.

A Mission review panel chaired by Professor Glenda Halliday guided the review. We thank members for their participation.
