From sizzling breakfasts to applause for local legends, Western Downs communities are invited to come together on Australia Day, Monday 26 January 2026, for a full day of celebration across the region.

Australia Day Events will be held in Chinchilla, Dalby, Jandowae, Miles, Tara and Wandoan, with each town hosting its own Australia Day Awards Ceremony with relaxed family-friendly activities designed to bring communities together.

Through the annual Australian Day Awards Western Downs Council recognises the locals who roll-up their sleeves, turn up week after week and go above and beyond to help their communities - whether through volunteering, leadership, mentoring or simply always being willing to lend a hand.

Western Downs Regional Council Mayor Andrew Smith and fellow Councillors will attend ceremonies across the region, presenting awards that acknowledge outstanding local community service, leadership and contribution.

Mayor Smith said Australia Day was a chance to pause, celebrate and recognise the people who make everyday life in the Western Downs better.

"Every town has its quiet achievers and its well-known characters - and often they're one and the same", Mayor Smith said.

"The Australia Day Awards are our way of celebrating the selflessness of our region's incredible volunteers and acknowledging the remarkable successes of our local community organisations, creative artists, and dedicated athletes."

"While our award ceremonies are at the heart of the day, there is more planned to keep locals entertained across the region, celebrations will include community breakfasts and barbeques, children's activities, games and informal gatherings, creating a welcoming atmosphere for families, friends and neighbours to enjoy the day together."

The Western Downs' newest citizens will also be welcomed at a special Citizenship Ceremony, which will be held amongst the beautiful surrounds of Mary's Place in Dalby.

"We will be extending a warm welcome to 28 new citizens in the Western Downs, and one of the most special honours I have the privilege of sharing." Mayor Smith Said.

"Our new citizens will be among the more than 18,800 people from over 150 countries who will become new Australians at one of 325 citizenship ceremonies being held across the nation on 26 January 2026,"

Mayor Smith said, "I warmly welcome everyone to head along to their local Australia Day festivities to welcome our newest Aussies, congratulate our awards recipients, and celebrate all the wonderful aspects of being an Australian living in the Western Downs."
