Australian Coast Guard VF9 Awarded City Key

Council is proud to bestow the Key to the City to Coast Guard Queenscliff, officially known as Australian Volunteer Coast Guard Association VF9, in recognition of 50 years of dedicated volunteer marine rescue service to our community.

The special event took place on Tuesday 19 May during National Volunteer Week, a fitting time to celebrate the incredible contribution of volunteers who give their time to keep our waters safe.

It was wonderful to see Libby Coker MP, Federal Member for Corangamite and Beverley McArthur MP, Member for Western Victoria Region attend the event, alongside the family, friends and other valued supporters of the Coast Guard Queenscliff.

For five decades, the Coast Guard Queenscliff volunteers have been on call 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, carrying out vital marine search and rescue operations across Port Phillip and through The Rip. Their courage, commitment and selfless service have helped people in times of need.

This year's 50th anniversary celebrations have already included an Open Day, fishing competition and art show, with a gala dinner to come later in the year, all helping to raise awareness and understanding of volunteer marine rescue in our community.

Mayor Donnie Grigau presented the Key to the City to Flotilla Commander Mr Chris Smith in recognition of the Flotilla's sustained history of volunteer service to the community. The Mayor expressed that the awarding of the Key to the Borough is one of the highest honours that can be bestowed. It is a symbolic gesture representing trust, gratitude, and recognition of exceptional service to the community.

He went on to say, "This acknowledgement celebrates the ongoing commitment of your members and the important role you will continue to play for generations to come".

"As your anniversary year unfolds, it is clear your work extends beyond rescue. You are helping to build awareness, connection, and appreciation for the vital role of volunteer marine services - something the entire Borough can be proud of."

Flotilla Commander Mr Chris Smith said receiving the Key to the Borough of Queenscliffe is not only recognition of the part, but also a responsibility for the Future. "It strengthens our commitment to continue serving the community with the same dedication, professionalism and care that defined the past five decades".

We thank the past and present volunteers of the Coast Guard Queenscliff for their remarkable dedication to our community.
