Australian wines make their presence felt in India

Australian winemakers are growing their presence in India, where there is a growing market for higher-quality wines. Torbreck Vintners launched 6 wines in the mid-priced to premium range recently. Yalumba also launched new wines after securing a new importer with Austrade's help.

Yalumba secures new importer with help from Austrade

In October 2021, Austrade helped Yalumba to secure its presence in the Indian market.

Yalumba's export arm Negociants International was looking for a new Indian importer. Austrade seized the opportunity to connect Negociants with Chenab Impex, a Mumbai-based importer. Yalumba is the first Australian wine in Chenab Impex's portfolio.

The deal allows Yalumba to retain and build a presence in India. This is vital at a time when trade disruptions are affecting its exports to traditional Asian markets.

'It's a perfect example of the importance of local market intelligence,' says Stuart Rees, Senior Trade and Investment Commissioner, Austrade India. 'We keep track of how Australian brands are doing in the market and match opportunity with our clients' need.'

Yalumba launched its Samuel's Collection Barossa Shiraz, and the Yalumba Y Series: Shiraz, Chardonnay, Viognier and Shiraz–Viognier.

Formed in 1849, Yalumba is Australia's oldest and largest family-owned wine company. The Y Series is a collection of iconic classics and new varietals. Each wine is crafted with fruit from South Australia's famed wine regions.

Torbreck launches premium wine range

The COVID-19 pandemic paused the growth in wine consumption in India. But the market is reopening, along with an appetite for new wine. This appetite includes new varieties beyond entry and mid-priced wines, and at the premium level.

Torbreck Vintners is eager to share its premium wines with Indian consumers. It appointed a new Mumbai-based importer – Vinopolis Wines LLP – and launched 6 wines in September. These are priced in the premium to ultra-premium range.

The wines are Grenache Shiraz, Woodcutter's Shiraz, Steading, Struie, The Factor and RunRig.

Austrade India's Stuart Rees was at the launch to support Torbreck. Austrade will continue to help the company grow its presence and market share in India.

Founded in 1994, Torbreck Vintners produces Rhone-style red and white wines from the oldest and arguably finest vineyards in the Barossa Valley.
