Australians Offer Advice to Cut Living Costs

New research has revealed what Australians have actually done to reduce the rising cost-of-living.

Budget meal-box company, EveryPlate, has analysed popular subreddit r/AusFinance to shortlist some top tips to tackle the cost-of-living crisis.

One Reddit user asked, "What have you actually done to reduce your cost of living?' Many of us know what we should do (negotiate interest rates, shop at Aldi, cut takeaway coffees and avo toast), but what have you actually done and stuck with?"

The post is garnering a range of responses from users. As of February 20th 2023, the question has 94% upvotes and over 1,000 comments and responses.

10 Tips to Reduce Your Cost of Living, That Actually Work

  1. Basing meals around cheap staples (brown rice, pasta, legumes, oats).

  2. Change insurers, mobile providers and internet providers for cheaper rates.

  3. Cut back on takeaways and eat out less.

  4. Put solar panels on.

  5. Making better use of food, throwing away less food.

  6. Reduce takeaway coffees.

  7. Preparing food at home to avoid buying on the go.

  8. Buying and wearing secondhand clothing.

  9. Cut subscriptions.

  10. Cooking less meat and buying what's on special.

Unsurprisingly, a lot of the responses revolve around food, eating out less and takeaways. One Reddit user comments, "Spending more time at home. Eating out less, ensuring I take my lunch to work every day."

Another user continued, "Cut back on takeaway & ubereats (we were out of control a few years back, takeaway was 3-4 times a week as well as restaurants on weekends, now it's more like restaurant once a week and takeaway about once a week at most, this is a huge savings area)."

One Redditor said: "Dusted off the coffee machine sitting in the corner and actually taught myself how to make a passable latte every morning before work is the most obvious penny-saver for myself."

At EveryPlate, we know that the cost of living is increasing, and that's especially apparent when it comes to food shopping and takeaways.
