The Cessnock Library team is thrilled to announce an upcoming author talk featuring local historical fiction writer Paula J Beavan, who will discuss her latest release Rebel Spirits at the Vincent Street library from 11am-12pm on Saturday 30 May.
Set against the rugged Australian bush of the 1860s, Rebel Spirits is a gripping tale of resilience, loyalty, and the cost of choosing love when survival is on the line. It follows Irish immigrant Ellen Maguire, who, desperate to save her familyʼs struggling roadside inn, turns to the illicit trade of distilling poteen (an Irish alcoholic spirit) using her grandmotherʼs old remedy book. Her life is further complicated by the arrival of Jack Bell, an injured Englishman searching for his missing niece. As romance sparks between the pair, Ellen finds herself caught in a web of blackmail, ruffians, and the prying eyes of the constabulary.
Perfect for fans of Tea Cooper and Darry Fraser, Rebel Spirits draws on the rich landscapes and heritage of the Hunter Valley - a hallmark of Beavanʼs writing. As a descendant of one of the regionʼs original European settlers, Beavan weaves deep personal history into her narrative, bringing the colonial era to life with authenticity and passion. She is a celebrated voice in contemporary historical fiction, known for her previous works, Daughter of the Hunter Valley and Among the Grey Gums.
Library Services Co-ordinator Andrew Powell said his team was delighted to welcome Beavan back to Cessnock Library.
"Paula has a wonderful ability to transport readers into the heart of the Hunter Valleyʼs past," said Mr Powell.
"Rebel Spirits is a fantastic addition to her body of work, and we look forward to hearing more about the research and personal inspiration that went into crafting this compelling mystery."
Attendees will have the chance to hear firsthand about Beavan's writing process, connection to local history, and the inspiration behind Ellen Maguireʼs daring journey.
