The irreverent and iconic Bald Archy Prize is back at the Peppin Heritage Centre Gallery from 25 October to 23 November, bringing with it a riotous celebration of satire, caricature and the larrikin spirit that has made it a national treasure.
The Opening Night kicks off on Friday 24 October, 5:30pm–7:00pm, featuring light refreshments and a special address by Tim Kurylowicz, Manager of the Museum of the Riverina, at 6pm.
Guests will be among the first to view this year's collection of cheeky, clever, and sometimes controversial portraits.
Judged by none other than Professor Maude Cockatoo, the world's premier avian art critic, the Bald Archy Prize has long been a platform for artists of all styles and standards to take a humorous swipe at public figures.
Past winning subjects include Kerry Packer, Shane Warne, John Howard, and Pauline Hanson.
Founded by the late Peter Batey OAM, the Bald Archy was created to amuse – much to the horror of those who believe laughter has no place in a gallery.
As Batey once said:
"It was meant to amuse – apparently a problem with people who believe audible laughter shouldn't be permitted in an art gallery, let alone unsolicited conversation with a complete stranger."
Now administered by the Museum of the Riverina, the Bald Archy continues to tour regional Australia, bringing satire and storytelling to communities far and wide.
Mayor of Edward River Council, Cr Ashley Hall, said the exhibition is a welcome inclusion on the region's cultural calendar.
"This is the kind of event that brings people from all walks of life together – it's bold, it's funny and it celebrates the creative spirit of our community. We're proud to host the Bald Archy and invite everyone to come along, have a laugh and enjoy the art."
