Ballarat’s History and Heritage Celebrated

Ballarat’s Virtual Heritage Weekend (May 30 & 31) will provide an opportunity to engage in stories of our First Nations Peoples culture.

Barry Gilson, a local singer and poet who specialises in bringing back the ancient words and language of his people, the Wauthaurung, will share his story of Country.

This story is beautifully captured in the lush green country at Gordon, just outside of Ballarat.

Fittingly, Ballarat’s Heritage Weekend coincides with National Reconciliation Week (May 27-June 3).

On 26 January 2020 the City of Ballarat’s Koorie Engagement Action Group (KEAG) initiated, organised and led Ballarat’s first Survival Day Dawn Service at Lake Wendouree, recognising the date as a day of mourning for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.

Ballarat’s (Virtual)Heritage Weekend will revisit the ceremony with a presentation of images from this important event, which has been nominated for a prestigious HART award.

Cr Jim Rinaldi says Ballarat’s Heritage Weekend reminds us that history is being made every day in Ballarat and the stories of our heritage, change, understanding and respect will continue to be told.
