Ballina Shire: Myths, Magic & Molecules Unveiled

Georgi Milln.jpg

Northern Rivers Community Gallery (NRCG) presents four new exhibitions this September, with a focus on the mythology of the Scottish Highlands, the magic of mixed-media sculptural ceramics, molecular drawings and the marvellous power of community arts. Gallery Coordinator Imbi Davidson says "this group of exhibitions presents a range of contemporary artworks that explore deep and meaningful themes through a range of mediums and techniques, and our annual celebration of community artists".

Glimpse of Alba – Sealladh Air Alba | Jemima Patch-Taylor

Glimpse of Alba is an exploration of the rich folklore and wild terrain of the Scottish Highlands. Delving into Celtic and Pictish mythicism, the works gravitate towards ancestral stories that depict feminine characters as multifaceted beings that can be empathetic and loving, as well as violent and vengeful. In 2023, Jemima received the SCU Kaske Fellowship Grant to travel to the Scottish Highlands and experience its folklore firsthand. She yearns to keep culture alive by telling these stories and inviting the Scottish language into her life.

Beneath the Fallen Petals – Uncovering the Seeds of Surrender | Lauren Hotson

Beneath the Fallen Petals – Uncovering the Seeds of Surrender reflects on the universal human experience of mortality and renewal through a series of intricately crafted burial jars and mixed-media sculptural works. Inspired by ancient funerary practices and humanity's enduring relationship with nature's cycles, Hotson's burial vessels feature textured surfaces, evoking geological rhythms and tidal formations. Accompanied by evocative assemblages of found natural materials with handmade porcelain flowers, the exhibition asks the viewer to contemplate surrender and impermanence, and the unexpected beauty that can emerge from decay.

Do we choose? | Georgi Milln

Do we choose? is an invitation to explore the complexities of choice and the forces that shape our decisions. Using fine-line pen drawings from a molecular viewpoint this exhibition by local artist Georgie Milln challenges visitors to reconsider their perceptions of free will and the unseen influences that guide their lives.
