Basics Keep Townsville Running In 2025

Thousands of potholes have been filled, hundreds of trees have been pruned and more than 100km of roads and footpaths have been line marked by Townsville City Council's crews this year.

Council manages a road and transport network of more than 600 kilometres of footpaths and 1800 kilometres of local roads and maintains more than 300 parks, playgrounds and open spaces across the city.

Mayor Nick Dametto said Council's teams had been hard at work in the face of a year filled with extreme weather events.

"It's no secret that this year was challenging, kicking off with weeks of record-breaking rainfall which caused significant damage across our local government area, including creating potholes, sinkholes, landslips and water pipe ruptures. But in the midst of all of this, Council's teams were hard at work to make sure our city could run as smoothly as possible," Cr Dametto said.

"More than 5000 potholes were filled this year and 113,000 lineal metres were line marked to keep our transport network up to scratch for commuters. The team has also cleared more than 1000 drains in preparation for the upcoming high-risk weather season.

"During the year the team completed five controlled burns ahead of what has already been an active bushfire season, helping to keep our community safe.

"All of these works are undertaken by a very dedicated team of Townsville locals to keep our residents safe, our assets repaired and our open spaces cared for."

Cr Dametto said Council was remaining focused on getting the basics right for the entire Townsville community.

"Council invested $233.6 million into our city's road infrastructure and maintenance in the 2025/26 Budget and Operational Plan, with a further $4.3 million of capital investment into drainage and stormwater," he said.

"This investment and the continued work of our teams in this space reflects Council's commitment to getting the basics right."
