Bega Valley Shire Council will begin its November sewer cleaning program next week, with works scheduled across Bermagui, Bega, Tura Beach and South Pambula.
The program will start on Tuesday 11 November and is expected to be completed by Friday 28 November, depending on weather and site conditions.
Water and Sewer Services Manager, Steve Marshall said residents affected by the works will receive a notice outlining the specific dates and times for their area, along with details on how to prepare.
"Sewer cleaning, also known as jetting, uses high-pressure water to clear the sewer mains of roots, debris and other build-up," Mr Marshall said.
"It's an essential part of maintaining a healthy sewer network and protecting the environment from potential overflows."
The works also help Council identify and address common problems caused by items that should never be flushed—such as wet wipes, nappies and oils.
While rare, the jetting process can occasionally cause minor 'blowback', where water is pushed back through household plumbing.
Residents are encouraged to take simple precautions during the works, including:
- Keeping toilet lids closed and weighted down with an object like a thick book
- Checking the overflow relief gully trap is clear of obstructions like soil, paving or pot plants.
Gully traps are small, round drains usually located in your yard. They act as a safety point to ensure any overflow occurs outside the home, not inside.
These preventative works help keep the sewer system flowing freely, reduce costly blockages and safeguard local waterways.
