Bendigo Library Upgrades Public Toilets, Parent Facilities

The City of Greater Bendigo has completed a major project to improve the Bendigo Library's public toilet and parent facilities to comply with the current National Construction Code and make them safer and easier to access.

The project has included:

  • Demolition of the old public toilet area and construction of new self-contained toilet cubicles to improve safety and efficiency
  • Demolition of the former female/nappy change room opposite the reception desk and refurbishment of this area to provide an all-gender family/carer friendly bathroom and baby feeding and change area
  • Reconfiguration of the Activity Room, into office spaces to provide passive surveillance for improved safety and staff accessibility
  • Construction of a dedicated cleaner's room for improved cleaning functionality

Today Member for Bendigo West Maree Edwards, Goldfields Library CEO Mark Hands and City of Greater Bendigo Healthy Communities and Environments Director Jess Howard inspected the new facilities.

Healthy Communities and Environments Director Jess Howard said Bendigo Library is one of Greater Bendigo's most accessed and used public buildings

"This project is important because it has provided greatly improved and much safer toilet and family facilities for the many hundreds of people of all ages who visit the library each day," Cr Prince said.

"The new facilities have transformed the library and the City is very appreciative of the funding received from the Victorian Government's Living Libraries Infrastructure Program to undertake this project."

Goldfields Library Corporation CEO Mark Hands said it was wonderful to welcome the community back into this greatly improved area of the building.

"We've had Bendigo Art Gallery, Bendigo Writers Council and many gatherings and events in the Activity Room already, and we hear from patrons daily how much the improved amenities are appreciated," Mark said.

"The works have made our library even more welcoming and accessible for everyone who is coming in to enjoy the spaces, the services and the collections."

The project was funded by a $412,586 grant from the Victorian Government's Living Libraries Infrastructure Program and the City of Greater Bendigo.
