Best Boards Conference helps nonprofits maximize impact

Nonprofit board members and executives are invited to attend Rice University's Glasscock School of Continuing Studies annual Best Boards Conference.

The one-day program offered March 5 is designed to help nonprofit board members and staff work together more effectively.

The conference features sessions from experts in the field along with information and lessons participants can take back to their organizations. Sessions include topics such as "Leveraging Advocacy to Drive Policy Change," "How Boards Create an Inclusive Environment and Culture" and "Understanding the Importance of the Board's Role as a Philanthropy Advocate."

This year's keynote speaker is Ellen Cohen, a former Houston City Council member and mayor pro tem who has served as the executive director of the American Jewish Committee and the CEO of the Houston Area Women's Center. She also served in the Texas Legislature as state representative for District 134 from 2007-11.

"The Glasscock School's mission is to advance our city through exceptional community leadership programming, and this particular program is of utmost importance to the growth of those organizations, staff and volunteers who dedicate themselves to Houston," said Robert Bruce, dean of the Glasscock School. "For 19 years, we have provided this distinctive professional resource to nonprofit board leaders, and it gives us a tremendous sense of pride to know that we are serving those who have dedicated themselves to serving others."

Tickets are $185 per person, or $135 per person for groups of three or more from one organization or for members of the Association of Advancement Services Professionals, the Association of Fundraising Professionals, Apra or Charitable Gift Planners of Houston.
