Beswick to get 22 new houses by end of year

NT Government

More families in Wugularr (Beswick) have access to safe and affordable public housing thanks to the jointly funded Australian and Northern Territory governments' $2.1 billion Remote Housing Investment Package.

The Wugularr remote housing development will deliver 22 new homes for the community of 500 people by the end of the year. Eleven homes have been handed over to residents so far.

The homes have been designed in consultation with the communities through Local Decision Making agreements. Six community engagement sessions have been held in Wugularr to ensure the specific housing needs of the community are met.

Tenants of the new homes can now comfortably accommodate their families, many of whom were previously living together in crowded accommodation. The mix of four and five-bedroom homes has created modern and spacious housing solutions, helping to tackle the issue of overcrowding in remote communities.

Investment in housing in remote communities like Wugularr also helps the local economy with this project delivering local jobs and contracts for Aboriginal-owned companies like Yingwati Pty Ltd, who worked on preparing the land for the first subdivision stage.

Katherine-based business NJ Homes (NT) Pty Ltd is constructing the homes, with an additional 32 bedrooms already delivered through the first 11 homes.

The Remote Housing Investment Package has already delivered 1830 additional bedrooms across 73 remote communities in the Northern Territory.
